Magnetism

Magnetism

Magnetism is a natural invisible force that attracts certain object. It's like a static energy that forces electric currents to move. Some scientist noticed that a rock can be a magnet, but most people know that magnets work because of the electric charges.

What is a magnet?

A magnet is a piece of iron or steel that attracts certain objects. Like metals, a magnet is made up of small particles called molecules, which in turn are made up of atoms. All the molecules in a piece of iron are facing different directions. If the molecules are rearrange to make them face the same way, they will act together as a magnet that creates a powerful force.

Make it work

You may try to test the power of magnet through a simple experiment. Just follow the instructions below.

You will need

  • a small magnet with a hole in the center
  • thin cardboard
  • paint
  • brushes
  • black marker
  • thin wire mesh
  • dowel and string
  • X-Acto knife
  • paper clips
  • stencil brush

Procedure:

  • Cut out large, medium, and small fish shapes from different colors of cardboard.
  • Draw in the eye, gills, and mouth with a black marker.
  • Create a fishing line by tying the magnet to the string. Attach the other end of the string to the dowel rod.
  • Attach paper clips to the fishes' noses.
  • Create a sea from a cardboard box painted blue.
