Magnetic Fields
If you want to see the actual magnetic field try to lay a piece of paper
over a magnet and sprinkle iron fillings onto it. The force of the
magnet is strong enough to work through the paper, and the fillings will
act like tiny magnets, rolling around the two poles where the force is
strongest.
Make it work
Use the power of magnetism to draw pictures with iron filings.
You will need
- cardboard
- clear acetate sheets
- rubber bands
- iron filings and a magnet
- scissors
- clear tape
Safety Measure:
Iron filings can be dangerous so take extra safety measures before you
start with the experiment. Don't breathe them in or swallow
any, and don't lick your fingers after touching them.
Procedure:
- Cut out a rectangle of cardboard and put a mark on it. Cut along the
red lines and fold and glue along the pencil lines to make a box.
- Take two pieces of clear acetate and cut them slightly
bigger. Tape them in place with clear tape.
- Draw some silly faces on sheets of white paper, leaving out the hair.
- Put a face card inside the box and shake iron filings on top of it.
Snap the box shut with the elastic bands. Put the drawing box on a flat
surface. Now you can "draw" the hair on your face by passing a magnet
over the acetate.
